Not Much Better.

Well, I played poker all day (your night).  I lost about $500.  That seems bad, but when you consider that I was down almost $1200, it is a nice come back.  I am fucking exhausted.  I am going to go to sleep a little early.

So Tired…

Ugh.  Today is a tough day.  I am so tired.  I slept like shit.  It was hot as hell in my house and my time for sleeping was between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM (your time).  I slept like crap.  It’s dark as shit outside and I just want to go to sleep.  I am going to go to the gym to get my blood flowing, then maybe go play poker.  That always seems to keep me awake.

I need to get an air conditioner and some blackout shades.  I think I will see what I can find on amazon.com.

Easier and Harder than I thought.

OK, I am really getting into this now.  It’s been fun but challenging.  I think my sleep rhythm is settling into the 30 hour schedule.  That has been a little less difficult than I expected it to be.  I have been doing OK keeping up with the work I need to get done, but that may be because I am not really heavy with work right now.  I had a couple marathon poker sessions at the Hawaiian Gardens Casino recently.  I love that place.  It may not be as fancy as others, like Hustler or Commerce or the Bike, (it is a tent, after all), but I think it’s my favorite place to play.  Also, I have decided that being a professional gambler is probably the perfect profession for someone living the thirty hour life.

I cashed in a tournament a few “days” ago, which was nice.  I only got 8th place.  Still, out of 145, that’s not too bad.  It was cool because I played on a Tuesday night (your time) right after got up and showered, so I was fresh and ready to face a new “day” while most others had just gone through a full day.  HG also has “graveyard” tournaments which begin at 4:30 AM on Friday and Sunday mornings.  When it works with my schedule, I may try to play in these, as I will be fresh and most others will presumably be exhausted.  Hopefully this will give me an advantage.  Anyway, in my two marathon sessions, I ended up winning about 800 (including cashing in that tourney) in the first one, and loosing about a grand in the second session.  Overall, not good, but it could be worse.  I played too loose the second session and then I was chasing cards too much from then on.

Overall, I am enjoying this experiment so far.  It’s tough though when my main source of human interaction is with a bunch of old Asian men around a poker table.  I need to make a more conscious effort to be in touch with my friends.   That’s been the hard part.  It’s my fault too, I am being pretty disciplined about sticking to the schedule, but it is killing what little social life I had.  I think I may try to meet some friends for lunch (their lunch) this coming week, when I am up during the day, anyway.

Not so bad.

Well, I have been doing it for about a week(your time) now and it is working well.  I will try to blog about it regularly and let everyone know how it’s going, including the positive and negative aspects of it.  I have found it both bizzare and rewarding so far, but my body and mind are still getting used to it, so I have had days where I was basically walking around in a daze.   Oddly, these dazed days seem to be when my “days” occur mostly during daylight, and not so much when my “days” include the dark hours.  I can’t explain that one, but even if I could, nobody would care.  So, what I am going to do is use this blog to track my physical and emotional state, and to keep everyone up to date on this lifestyle.  Hopefully, I won’t look like an idiot (if it’s not too late for that).  Anyway, most of my friends know that I developed this theory in college (yes, more than 10 years ago).  I can say that the early returns show that, at least for me personally, it appears that I was right.

The biggest problem I have encountered so far is that it can sometimes be tough to schedule business meetings with people who are on a 24-hour cycle.  Luckily, about a year ago I started my own business consulting firm, and most of my clients are flexible, although I have not told any of them about this.  I am not convinced they would understand.  Maybe some day…

It has also been tough to keep up with my friends.  I have had to skip trips to the bar because my schedule on those days is opposite of theirs.  That’s the toughest part so far, coordinating schedules with people living on the sun-cycle.  I don’t really mind being up when it’s dark, I have always been a night-guy anyway.  Fortunately (and unfortunately!) I am single right now, so I don’t have to worry about coordinating schedules with a girlfriend, but if there are any hotties out there who are looking to convert to a 30-hour day cycle, give me a call.

OK, well, I just got up and I need to make a few phone calls before my clients go to lunch, then I will hit the gym, grab a bite to eat for breakfast (thank God for Denny’s) and then bust out a few reports for a new client, which I will send to him using a delayed e-mail send so that he receives them after he gets to work tomorrow, well after I hit the hay.  Bye for now and thanks for reading.

So I finally decided to do it.

That’s right, after years of sounding like a douchebag spouting off about my thirty hour day theory, I decided to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak, and take a crack at living the thirty hour day.  Of course, this will present some minor (and some not so minor) difficulties, what with the 24-hour cycle of the earth’s rotation, and the fact that virtually everyone else on the planet is living on a twenty-four hour cycle.  Anyway, I will update you as the experiment goes on.
